Earlier this morning, the NPPA (who I am an active member with) sent out a press release that their layoffs in their organization. Come to find out their photo editor and a couple of photographers were let go as well; however, in all about 200 layoffs, though. Even earlier this year the SI (Sports Illustrated) Magazine laid off their photographers as well. Even over here, there were changes as well in the media. I know kids are wondering if you hear lays offs are going on - what about us? This is my best answer, one of my old Professor told me - if you want a job in the media, then you will have to pay your dues. Of course that was almost 13 years ago; however, things have changed. The demand for coverage has changed. For example, Section V Cheerleading - there used to be almost 10 photographers at the event and that was almost back in 2008. This past fall coverage (10/31/15) - it was only 2 of us. The photographer that I was hanging out with is the freelancer for the Rochester D&C (before then, he was the main photographer for the Messenger Post). For me, well my title changed when I got there. It started as the Batavia Daily News and Livingston County News freelance photographer. After an unexpected 30 second interview right on the spot; because, I didn't want children feel left out this year - I became the Official Photographer for Section V in Cheerleading. Still couldn't believe the past photographer just drop the coverage. I mean, why would you do something like that. All you had to do is just take the extra 5 seconds to let someone know that you will not be there. If for some odd reason that ever happen to me that I know that I will not be there - trust me, I will take the time to get someone in there to cover it. Even when I was covering the Section V Field Hockey Championship, there was no news photographer/videographer covering the event. Now that one... just kills me. I understand there may not be a ton of schools; however, these girls (... before I forget, I do cover states in Field Hockey and there was a boy playing field hockey too! I give him a lot of credits!) work their tails off to get to the championship! It's Sectionals... have we forgotten about it? I know, I have been very, very busy with this year since the coverage has changed for me and I know there are times I'm ready to call it a day; however, we still need to put the I give dam first for others!
