SERRATAPHOTO - The Future of Sports in Small Schools

Growing up back in the days in Barker, you didn't have to worry about lacked interest in a sport. That was almost 12 years ago. Now... things have changed. I used to run cross-country back in 2000 - you didn't have to worry about combing with a school. However, if you played football - that's a different story. A couple of years ago, Roy-Hart and Barker combined their football program which was smart. During one of my photography assignments for the Batavia Daily News - I was out in Pavilion photographing Oakfield-Alabama/Elba vs. Pavilion in girls soccer. Now keep in mind OA and Elba at one time were separate teams. Last year or this year they have combined the soccer, team. Just before school was out this year, Warsaw and Letchworth combined their football program too. You hear that enrollment is down which can cause this type of effect in sporting a team (Barker may have a class size of only 20 kids. Years ago, we had roughly 80 kids per class size. My graduating class was about 80 kids). However, I'm very proud that everyone is working together to still give kids the opportunity to play in sports. I do wish everyone the best of luck this season!
